Carrick and De Zerbi Head Five Premier League Bosses Feeling the Heat
Michael Carrick, Roberto De Zerbi, Álvaro Arbeloa, Marco Rose and Matthias Jaissle are the Premier League managers under most pressure after six games. Here's where each stands and what comes next.

Six games into the season, the Premier League sack race has five clear names in it. Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi drew with each other at Old Trafford on Saturday and neither man got the win he needed. Álvaro Arbeloa and Marco Rose are still waiting for their first league victory, and Matthias Jaissle has just watched Newcastle concede four for the second away game running.
Nobody has been sacked yet, and none of these clubs has said anything about changing manager. This is where each one stands after the weekend, and what’s coming next.
| Manager | Club | Pos | Pts | Next league game |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arbeloa | Fulham | 20th | 2 | Hull (H), Sat 3pm |
| De Zerbi | Spurs | 19th | 3 | Coventry (H), Mon 8pm |
| Rose | Bournemouth | 18th | 3 | Sunderland (H), Sun 2pm |
| Carrick | Man Utd | 13th | 6 | Leeds (A), Sun 2pm |
| Jaissle | Newcastle | 11th | 8 | Aston Villa (H), Sat 5.30pm |
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham
Fulham are bottom with two points and no win in six. Saturday’s defeat at Ipswich was the cruellest yet: Ryan Sessegnon put them ahead early in the second half, then Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 88th minute and Dara O’Shea headed the winner in stoppage time.
Arbeloa, who replaced Marco Silva in the summer, didn’t sound like a man worried about his job afterwards. “I never worry about my position. I don’t feel fear. You cannot be a coach if you feel it,” he said at Portman Road, as reported by Yahoo Sports. He added: “It’s not about my position, it is about Fulham’s position.”
Hull visit Craven Cottage on Saturday. Of the five, we think Arbeloa is the most exposed. He’s in his first Premier League job, his side are bottom, and a home defeat to a newly promoted team would be very hard to explain.
Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs
Tottenham are still waiting for a league win after a summer in which they spent heavily on the squad. The point at Old Trafford felt better than most: Bryan Mbeumo scored for United, Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes later, and Dominic Solanke headed in an equaliser deep into stoppage time.
De Zerbi said he was happy with the spirit he saw, and the club appear to agree. TEAMtalk reported after the draw that Spurs have no plans to sack him and that the hierarchy remain behind him. That’s a report, not a club statement, but it fits with how they’ve handled him so far, including the training camp in Marbella.
Coventry, who are 14th, come to north London on Monday at 8pm.
Marco Rose, Bournemouth
Bournemouth have three points and no league win under Rose, who took over when Andoni Iraola left for Liverpool. They’ve thrown away a lot of winning positions, often late, and the 5-1 defeat at Chelsea didn’t help the mood.
Rose’s case is that the performances have been better than the results. His side’s numbers back that up to a point, but he’s said himself that looking good earns nothing. Sunderland, who are one place and one point above them, visit the Vitality on Sunday in a game that suddenly carries a lot of weight.
Michael Carrick, Man Utd
United have one league win in six and sit 13th on six points. The draw with ten-man Spurs, conceded two minutes into stoppage time, stung more than most. We’ve already looked at who could replace Carrick if it comes to that, and he’s spoken publicly about the ‘clamour’ for change.
He’s got a big night before the next league game. United play Atlético Madrid in the Champions League tonight (Tuesday), 8pm UK time, with Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo both missing training on Monday and Bruno Fernandes carrying a knock. Then it’s Leeds away on Sunday at 2pm.
Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle
Jaissle started well, unbeaten in his first five games in all competitions after replacing Eddie Howe. Since then Newcastle have lost 4-1 at Leeds and 4-1 at Coventry, and they’re 11th.
“We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result,” he said after Monday night’s defeat, according to Sky Sports. Jamie Carragher told the same broadcaster that Newcastle had been “beaten up twice” in their last two away games. Newcastle had 19 shots at Coventry, so the attack isn’t the main problem. The defending is.
He’s lower on this list than the others because he’s only two months into the job and Newcastle are mid-table, not in the bottom three. Aston Villa at St James’ Park on Saturday at 5.30pm is the next test, and there’s more on his apology here.
Anyone else?
Frank Lampard would have been on this list a week ago. Coventry’s 4-1 win over Newcastle, which Sky Sports noted was their first Premier League home win in more than 9,000 days, has taken the heat off him for now. Régis Le Bris has Sunderland 17th on four points and plays Bournemouth on Sunday, so one of those two managers will come out of the weekend under more pressure.
At Liverpool, Andoni Iraola is nine points behind Manchester City after the 3-0 home defeat on Sunday, which is uncomfortable for a club that expects to win the title. Liverpool are ninth, though, and there’s no sign the club is thinking about a change. They go to Brentford on Saturday at 3pm.
